After Cyclone Sidr - My View from Dhaka

After a devastating cyclone which has left over 3000 dead - what is often left out is how quick many parts of Bangladesh has recovered. Dhaka City was a city that had trees blocking roads, power lines collapsed, and many low income houses were blown apart. Yet, people in this city have slowly rebuilt. But that's just the good news. The bad news is there are a lot of people still suffering and they need your help. I am in Bangladesh working on my own project to help the poor If you want to make a donation, consider the following places: The Red Cross www.redcross.org CARE International. http Muslim Aid www.muslimaid.org World Vision http A few of these are secular charities, but aid will be given to all regardless of religious affiliation. When to Use a Car Wax Or a Car Polish

As an Internet car care specialist, with almost a half-dozen loyal readers -- you can be assured that I get a ton of mail. Every day in my box is full - including lots of spam. I don't mean my email box, I mean the postal box in front of my house -- stuffed full of open, rancid cans of Spam.

Whoever is doing that, please stop.

Anyway, when I'm not scrubbing-out my mailbox with Chlorox, I write car care columns for people who care about their cars. I get a lot of questions about wax and polish. You'd think they never watched "The Karate Kid," where Mr. Miagi explained the whole wax on - wax off thing in detail - with Daniel-San providing the demo. So, people who are too lazy to watch a movie write and ask me how and when to polish their cars.

In fact, Dwayne Hebert of Waldo, FL writes:

Yo Mac

Can you tell me when I should wax or polish my car? Thx, dude.

Dwayne Hebert - Waldo, FL

Naturally, I added the caps, punctuation and the correct spelling for "Waldo."

The answer is: Yes, Dwayne, I can tell you when to wax or polish your car!

SWIRLS: The Curse that keeps coming back

Have you ever wondered why you have all those tiny swirl marks in your car's paint? You take good care of your car, in fact, you don't even use an automatic car wash, but nonetheless swirl marks appear on your hood, trunk, roof and sides of your car.

What causes those swirls?

Why... you do!

You see, when you wash your car, the brushes at the automatic car wash are holding onto dirt and other hard particles that work - like a team of filthy, little scoundrels - to swirl your paint as those brushes work their magic. So, while you car looks clean and bright, there are more swirls happenin' than a Saturday night at Dairy Queen.

If you wash your car by hand, you'll tend to use a swirling motion with your wash cloth, washing mitt or even with a soft car brush.  Tiny particles of dirt, grime, dried bug parts and bird poop are in that wash cloth or mitt and you are basically using those particles as abrasives to swirl the paint! The same thing happens when you dry the car.

Nasty, huh?

The best way to help avoid those swirls is to use a back & forth motion as you wash and dry, Pro detailers also use a 2nd rinse bucket. They dip their wash mitts into a rinse bucket and squeeze it out before dipping it back into the soap bucket. This leaves the dirt out of the soap and keeps that soapy water sparkling clean. Pretty smart -- those detail guys.

But let's say you already have swirls in your paint and you want them gone faster than a cheating spouse. What are the best products to use? Here are a few simple tips:

Check the label on waxes first

Many waxes have a light abrasive that will help remove bugs and tar from your paint, these are normally solvent-based products, because they use mineral spirits to soften the paint ever-so-slightly. (If you've ever used baby oil to remove paint or grease from your skin, you get the idea.) These waxes might have enough buffing capacity to remove some swirling, while the wax itself will fill-in the remainer of the swirls.

Remember that those remaining swirls are only masked by the wax. As your wax wears off, they'll return like an unwanted ex. Using a carnauba-based spray wax to refresh your wax job is an excellent way to keep those scratches from coming home. (Why do I choose carnauba-based sprays? Because carnuaba wax is a harder, deeper wax coating that will build on top of your first coat.)

Use a light-duty polish

If your swirls seem deep and you'd prefer to knock 'em down a bit before waxing, there are a myriad of good polishes available on the Web that will do the job. Surprisingly, I have not seen a decent polishing compound available at the big chain auto stores or big box stores. The polishes I've observed are either too harsh or too expensive, while others require professional application with machine-buffing only.

Do a little research and find a polish that is abrasive enough to remove the swirls yet light enough to be used by a Weekend Warrior like yourself. Yes, you can remove most swirls by hand with a little elbow grease and persistence. Do not expect to remove the swirls in one application.  If you want your car to sparkle better than the day it rolled-off the assembly line, then take the time to apply a 2nd, or even 3rd coat, of polish. This will guarantee results and make you and your car happier than Brad and Angelina at a fertility clinic.

How to polish

Very briefly, you should closely follow the manufacturer's recommended procedure for applying and removing polish, however the basics are quite simple:

Shake the bottle of polish very well.  Park your car in the shade or in a garage -- never in direct sunlight. Apply a quarter-sized dollop of polish to a clean, folded cotton cloth or polishing pad. Apply to a 2-foot by 2-foot area in a back and forth motion. Try not to use circular motion! (The reason for this is simple: swirls reflect light from all angles, back and forth scratches only reflects from two angles. Any scratches you might create while polishing will only be visible from two perspective angles.)

After rubbing the area for approximately one minute, use a soft terry cloth or microfiber towel to buff out the dried (or semi-dried) polish. Use back and forth motions again. Don't be afraid to buff at a 90-degree angle to your application process.

Be absolutely certain to aggressively snap the towel in the air after every buffing operation, (away from your car), to remove the trapped, dried polish. Dried polish on a towel can create - you guested it - swirl marks!

Repeat this process on the same area once or twice for best results, then move to the next area. Be sure to overlap slightly into the area(s) that have already been buffed.

Buffing a mid-sized car, like a Camry or a Malibu should require about 1.5 - 2 hours of work. This is why I recommend that you buff on Day #1 and wax on Day #2. However, if you purchase a good polish with a  wax-base or containing man-made polymers, you will be waxing as you go. Naturally, this wax will not be as deep or long-lasting as a full wax application, but it will protect your car very nicely until you have the time to wax it.

You will be extremely pleased with your results once you have polished your car and applied a deep, warm carnauba wax coating. Your car will stand-out and attract some positive attention and comments.

Be proud of your car - and yourself!

Best Car Insurance For Teenagers - Take Care in Making Selection

Getting the ideal auto insurance for your teenager ward can be bit tough experience for majority of parents. Here you should remain prepared to pay hefty amounts for getting a suitable insurance cover. But remember this is a reality and like all other parents you have to face it as well. If you are looking to get quality auto insurance for your teenage child then you need to follow certain guidelines to get the most suitable insurance for them. It is a very common fact that buying car insurance for teenagers is a major concern for the parents due to the high premium of auto insurance being charged. It's ironical that parents have to spend less amount of money for their own car insurance in comparison to their teenager ward's car insurance. Even senior citizens get auto insurance at a lower cost as compared to the teenagers' automobile insurance.

Auto Insurance for teenagers is costly because insurance companies consider teenagers as a high risk category. As it is, teenagers are more prone to accidents. While driving, most likely they may suffer or cause injury to others.

The teenagers share this common intention to drive the car in super fast speed, not knowing properly how to control the car in an emergency. Many times this can lead to an accident. The insurance company has to pay huge amount as an insurance claim is such a situation. Due to this reason the rate being charged is higher for the automobile insurance for teenagers.

Here are some factors which affect the premium of the auto insurance for teenagers heavily. If these factors are taken care of, then the premium of the car insurance for teenagers can be lowered by great extent. One such point is that one should take drivers' certificate by joining drivers' education classes conducted by various operators or the motor vehicles department of that particular state, this helps the teenagers a lot to get a low interest rate.

Another is good driving record without any road safety violation ticket or prior accident record in his or her name. The clean record helps the teenagers to get lower insurance rate gradually. Other points like consistent grade card or report also helps. It is assumed that good graders are always cautious even on road and so the chance of getting into accident for them is lower too. And this assumption helps them get discount on car insurance for teenagers leading to low premium for them.

And after getting the automobile insurance if teenagers maintain good record then he or she may get benefit the next time onwards.

Remote Car Starter Buying Guide

My store has been installing Remote Car Starters since the early 1990s. This experience has taught us what is important in a quality remote starter installation. With the cold season almost upon us, we thought it would be a good time to post our Top 10 List (in no particular order):

10. Warranty

The actual remote starter brain should be warrantied for as long as you own the car. Many quality companies offer this. If they do not, it is a possible sign of inferior equipment. Remote controls, however are rarely warrantied for more than a year. Our Pro line remotes carry a 2 year warranty and all our 2 way remotes have a $25 replacement plan.

9. Engine Speed Sensing

A good remote starter should have some method of monitoring the engine RPM's. Why is this important? There are a couple reasons:

* On a very cold day, the car might not start on the first turn of the key. The same is true with a remote starter. It might not start the first time the starter does it's thing. Without a method of sensing engine RPM's the remote starter will have no way of knowing that the vehicle has failed to start. The end result is that you go out to your car and it is still cold.

* The other main reason is over-rev protection. A quality remote starter will know if the engine speed is too high and shut off. A remote start that does not offer RPM sensing cannot know if this level is exceeded and could end with damage to the vehicle.

8. Transmitter Range

You want to make sure that the remote start that you are buying will allow you to start/stop/lock/unlock, etc from a long distance. Many people say that they just park their car right outside of their house and do not need a long rang transmitter. Just keep in mind the trips to the movies, the mall, the amusement park, etc. You will want to use your remote start then also and you will not be parked as close as at home. Our transmitters offer a minimum of 800 feet and some are over a mile!

7. Hood Safety Switch

Make sure that there is an emergency cutoff installed under the hood. This cutoff is designed to prevent the vehicle from remote starting if the hood is up. This protects you and your mechanic from forever having someone else open your ketchup bottles! DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS! Many shops skip this step because it saves time. Mobile Edge integrates a hood cutoff on every single job.

6. Manufacturer

Make sure that the manufacturer is a company that specializes in remote car starters. There are many companies out there that simply throw a label on a product and call it their own. You want to avoid that. It is our experience that these companies provide little if any support for their products and many will not be in business next year. Stick with the experts.

5. New Car Warranty

Do not let your car dealer tell you that an aftermarket remote car starter will void your warranty . This is against the law. The Magnuson Moss Act prevents a dealer from voiding a warranty simply because of the addition of aftermarket equipment. If that equipment or associated installation causes damage to the vehicle, the dealer does not have to warranty the job. This is more of a reason to go to a specialist shop that sell good remote starters and installs them professionally. I have a detailed PDF on this subject.

4. Do it Yourself?

Unless you are a certified technician with experience in remote car starter installation, DO NOT attempt to install your own remote starter. I know... The one you saw at WalMart comes with an instructional video. That video will teach you enough to make you dangerous. Trust me! It will not teach you how to integrate the transponder in a 2004 Ford or bypass the security in an 06 Trailblazer. The instructional video may have worked in the early 1990's, but today's cars are very sophisticated. Save yourself a ton of expense and headache and have it installed by someone who does this for a living and can be responsible for the job. This brings us to number 3.

3. Buy it Here / Install it There?

Do not buy your remote starter on eBay (or WalMart or Amazon, etc) and expect to find a quality, reputable shop that will install it for you. While many aftermarket shops will install stereos and amps purchased elsewhere, few if any will install a remote start purchased elsewhere. During remote starter season, the good shops are busy enough trying to keep up with their own work. If you find a shop that will install someone else's remote starter, they are likely not very busy. Do you want to trust your vehicle to that guy?

There is another very important reason not to buy a remote starter at one place and have it installed at another. Let's say something goes wrong. A remote starter is an electronic product and can fail. The guy that puts it in will blame the product and the manufacturer will say that it was installed wrong. Guess who is stuck in the middle with no recourse. When you have the shop that you buy a remote starter from install it, you have one place to go in the event of a failure. There cannot be any finger pointing.

2. Go to a Specialist

Look for a specialty shop. Not to bash any of the chain stores, but they have a much higher turnover rate with installers than a specialty shop. These are people that likely have less experience than a long term employee at a specialty shop. It is my experience that many installer "cut their teeth" at a chain store and, once they have more experience, move on to a specialist (We pay more!).

Many specialists (not all though) will solder all of their connections. I feel that this is very important. Crimp connectors can save up to an hour of installation time, but when dealing with the vehicle's electrical system, I want a rock solid connection. The only way to get that is by soldering the wires together. Mobile Edge has soldered every connection on every job for nearly 15 years.

Will a remote starter from a specialty shop cost more than from a chain store? Sometimes yes. But put that into perspective. Even if the job cost $100 more from a specialist, that difference is less than 1/10 of 1% of what you probably paid for your car. Why take the risk. Not to mention, when you deal with a specialist, you can talk to the installer, salesman and, in many cases, the owner. There is definitely a value in that.

1. More than Just a Remote Starter

Make sure that you review all of the convenience features that can be added to your remote starter with your salesperson before the installation! Most higher quality remote starters will allow a ton of cool features to be added or controlled from the remote. Anything from heated seats to keyless entry and rear defrost can be integrated with most better systems. It is A LOT cheaper to have this done at the time of installation. If you want to add it later, you may be paying for several hours of additional labor.

The Bottom Line

In summary, the cheapest price does not always save you money! When selecting a shop to have a remote starter put in, ask a lot of questions. How long have they been in business? How much experience do their technicians have? Do they have sophisticated computer programs to aid with installation? How do they handle warranty issues? You get the idea. The better shops will clearly rise to the top. They might cost a little more up front, but that extra expense will pay dividends in quality and piece of mind. I am sure that you will find that Mobile Edge is one of the best shops for your Remote Car Starter Installation.

Monsoon Care for Car Interiors

One of the many problems associated with monsoons are stinking interiors primarily due to water seeping into the car. However, the interiors can be kept dry by following certain simple tips.

Floor mats are the first ones that get mucky as the dirt on the mat soaks up water more readily. This problem can be avoided by using reusable mats or any old mats. Once the rain stops, these mats can be removed and replaced with fresh, dry mats. One can also used rubber mats instead of fabric mats, as rubber mats do not absorb water readily.

One important aspect that can lead to stinking car interiors during monsoon is ventilation. If the interiors are wet, it is always better to roll down the windows so that the interiors get dried up. Apart from that, the car interiors should be cleaned periodically so as to keep dirt away. A dry feet or footwear would give better control on the pedals. Hence, one must ensure to have dry feet before entering the car.

Another major problem that commonly crops up is bad smell inside the car during monsoons. Molds that grow due to moisture and humidity are the main reasons for a stinking smell inside the car. These molds might be growing beneath carpets or other interior areas. It is always better to locate the area and use antifungal agents to remove molds.

Smells inside the car can be neutralized using car perfumes such as Ambi Pur Car. Spills, pet smells and urine smells should be treated in a different manner. The best method is to soak up as much as possible and let the area get dried up. Now, the area should be cleaned properly using a soap solution and allowed to get dried up.

Paramore - Stuck On You w/ lyrics

Paramore - Stuck On You I heard you driving in my car Then in a frozen bar I claimed I didn't care for you But your verse got trapped inside my head Over and over again You played yourself to death in me I thought I'd drop you easily But that was not to be You burrowed like a summer tic So you invade my sleep and confuse my dreams Turn my nights to sleepless itch Stuck on you 'till the end of time I'm too tired to fight your rhyme Stuck on you 'till the end of time You've got me paralyzed Holding on the telephone I hear your midrage moan You're everywhere inside my room Even when I'm alone I hear your mellow drone You're everywhere inside of me Stuck on you 'till the end of time I'm too tired to fight your rhyme Stuck on you 'till the end of time You've got me trapped again I can't escape your incessant whine When you beam it out all across the sky No I can't escape your inside rhyme When you shoot it deep Straight into my mind

Preventative Car Maintenance in Summer Helps to Avoid that Sudden Breakdown

Preventative car maintenance in summer months is not much different from what it takes to maintain cars in winter. In summer, you have to regularly check and maintain the mechanical components of the car to tackle the rigors of the hot summer conditions. The following tips on preventative car maintenance in summer assures you trouble less rides:

The very first thing you need to take care is the cooling system. During the hotter months, the cooling system works more intensely to prevent overheating of the engine. For the mechanism to work effectively, the coolant and water mixture for a vehicle's radiator should measure to 50:50.

The next point about preventative car maintenance in summer is tire pressure. Tire pressure is important in all contexts - irrespective of whether it is for speed or for safety reasons. If you need your car's tires to last long and perform efficiently, you will need to inflate them properly. Properly pumped up tires help maintain the best possible contact with the road giving the vehicle steadiness and speed. Inflating tires improperly, on the other hand, leads problems like punctures.

Refer to your owner's manual for the ideal air-pressure for your vehicle's tire. Remember, summer heat causes the pressure within the tire to rise; hence, you will be required to check the air pressure when the tires are cold.

The subsequent preventative measure for your car's maintenance involves engine oil. The owner's manual specifically mentions the best engine oil for your vehicle during hot summers. Yet, the general rule for engine oil necessitates you to use a little thick, viscous oil, which lubricates the integral parts of the engine.

Next in order of importance is the car's battery. Car batteries hardly signal failure well ahead of time. It is advisable to leave all cares of car-batteries to professionals, especially in summertime when the excessive heat causes further damage to it. Changing your car battery every three years will save you a lot of trouble.

Beside these essential tips about preventative car maintenance in summer months, your cars need some lesser yet significant maintenance programs too. Replacing belts and hoses is one such car-care as is inspecting the wipers and wiper fluids.

Round up your preventative car maintenance in summer time by placing an emergency kit including basic tools like flashlights, pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. inside your car. With your car ready to budge, you can hoard some rations if you are really thinking of a long journey. Placing a first-aid kit in the car will make your journey 100% safe.

How to Take Care of Your Car Headlights

It is a common occurrence on the road - gleaming cars with sleek bodies, washed and polished to a fault, sporting yellowed, cloudy headlights! You see dirty, unkempt, cloudy, scratched headlights on old cars and you see them on swanky new cars. It is surprising that people would go through the trouble of vacuuming their interiors and hand polishing their exteriors while leaving their car headlights looking positively ugly.

Unattractive headlights are a compelling eyesore because your headlights form the basic character of your car. These are what you first observe in a car. They are the eyes of the car and play a big role in maintaining the good looks of your car. Clear headlights are also a safety requirement. Cloudy headlights do not throw proper light on the road and could very well lead you into a ditch at night. So, it is important to take care of your car headlights regularly, for both aesthetic and pragmatic reasons.

The good news is that maintaining your car headlights in great condition is easy; and investing some time in it will keep you safe and happy.

Cracked headlights: If one or both headlights are cracked, replace them immediately. Any crack on the surface will allow moisture and dust to seep in, making the headlights cloudy while increasing the glare for oncoming drivers. If you need to wait for the weekend or a holiday to get the headlight replaced, seal the crack with resin until you replace.

Dirty headlights: Use headlight cleaners to wipe your headlights. Dirty, cloudy headlights can greatly affect your night vision. So, every time you wash your windshield, make it a point to clean your car headlights too.

Maintenance: Many drivers say that they just do not remember to check the condition of their headlights. This is wrong. Inspect your headlights annually to make sure that they are in good condition and are focused properly. Replace bulbs once every year to keep your headlights in good working condition. And it is important to replace both bulbs, even if you have a situation where only one is burned out.

Condensation: Sometimes headlights get cloudy due to retention of moisture. To remove condensation, remove the headlight and drill a small hole at the bottom. Drain out water and leave the headlight to dry. Seal the headlight and reinstall it.

Headlight lenses: Most recent vehicles have lenses made of polycarbonate. This makes it easy to maintain and repair them, if necessary. However, though polycarbonate is resilient and hardy, it also has a tendency to cloud and yellow after extensive UV exposure. Fortunately, there are a number of clarifying agents to help you remove this haze.

For those who are less inclined to purchase products to clean their headlights, there are headlight repair and maintenance kits. These kits have everything you need to keep your lenses clean.

Keeping your car headlights in good condition is not a difficult task. All it needs is consistency.

Portable Car Covers

Portable car covers often become an essential accessory for people who do not want their cars to be affected by the elements when they are out and away from their garage's protection. The car, which has to go through a lot of rough terrains and weather conditions like rain, snow, wind and sleet, needs protection from the surroundings. Or it could be that one's car is expensive, or that it is a vintage car that needs a lot of protection. When at home, one can take care of the automobile, but when away from home, this is not possible, unless, of course, one takes a portable car cover.

The easiest analogy for a portable car cover is to think of it as a sleeping bag for cars. There are two types of portable car covers that are available on the market. One acts exactly like the sleeping bag, covering the car like a layer of skin. While this is a good car cover, it may not be sufficient for all purposes. For example, in conditions of hail or storm with high winds that stir up branches and pebbles, one may see the need for the other type of portable car cover, which makes a small shelter under which the car will stay.

These are various types of these portable car covers available in the market. However the best ones are easy to build and they provide great dry storage for the car in all kinds of outdoor conditions. The material of the cover is strong and durable and it can withstand normal wear and tear of bad weather conditions.

Such covers come with their own steel frames. One unmistakable quality is that these covers are easy to build and portable despite their seeming complexity. Often the durable steel frame is a type of pre-drilled frame assembly and which can be easily assembled with minimal hand tools. Also the design has to be such that water or snow runs off from the roof, preventing any water from getting close to the car.

To sum up, the qualities that one needs to look for while going in for a portable car cover is portability and ease in setting up and dismantling, with no drilling or cutting required.

Caring For Your Car Paint

Choosing a color for your desired car involves an array of influencing factors. The color of your car reflects your personality as black is cool, red is sensual, silver signifies your stylish lifestyle and white cars are conservative. But can you imagine what color will it be after a few years on the road? Before that nightmare happens, I believe the prevention lies in caring for your car paint straight from the day you get the keys.

Caring for your car paint may be a tough job, but if you want your car to give you your desire, then it's for you to give her what she wants so that she retains her allegiance, radiance, luster and beauty. But the secret lies not in giving her some few lustrous touches during the few months after you own her, it's the continuous care that she needs, sometimes a beauty touch and sometimes a healing touch.

The article below will help you out in caring for your car paint. Believe me, vehicles also feel love and care. It's from my experience I have gained over the years that I'm giving you this advice. The more you care and let the car understand your love, the longer it will be your companion.

Regardless of the types of finishes; acrylic, matte or enamel they are all subjected to environmental wear and tear. But if taken good care, they can last for months and years without even a sign of aging.

Exposure to sunlight, moist weather, pollution, etc., can diminish the glossy coat of your car.

I'd recommend washing your car at least once in a month. Residues like bird droppings or limestone drippings can permanently damage the paint if not washed off in time. A car, when washed dries up soon, but the moisture accumulates when it's dirty and starts corroding. Pressure wash can be a good option to clean the areas which are unreachable, but do not hold it too near as the pressure can peel off the paint. Wash every corner and joints where dirt and salt could accumulate.

The next step after washing your car is to wax. Waxing not only gives it a shine, but also protects it from harmful pollutants and ultra violet rays from the sun. It takes only about 30 minutes to completely wax a car in order to make it last two to three months. But, remember not to be fooled by the ads which claim to give you everlasting shine. Periodical waxing is the best way to make your car the talk of the town.

If you live in a humid area, or where salt use is high in winter, under coating and rust proofing is a must. This protects the paints below and it's vital mechanical parts like the braking system which saves you from dangers and harms.

Likewise, stone chips and scratches may also be a threat to the paint if not repaired on time. You don't need a specialist for doing these simple jobs. Just get yourself geared up with a touch-up or spray paint of the same color and a tooth pick. Shake the paint well and spray a small amount into the cap. Now dip the tooth pick into the paint and cautiously fill up the damaged portion and you are done concealing a blemish.

To remove some marks which damage just the clear coat, you will need an ultra fine 1500-grit or 2000-grit waterproof sandpaper which then should be used to work over the effected area. After this, the marks will vanish, but the clear coat will also lose its shine. Now, to give its shine back, use a few drops of polishing compound using a damp sponge. Rub well until it shines back and then blush the area with a good quality car wax.

Now that you have all these handy tips with you, be sure to promise your car a good care always. Caring for your car paint is just like caring for your face and skin. So, always keep the car just the way you keep your skin and hair. But in order to give it a true long-lasting life, you must give importance to the engines as well. So, remember to get your car regularly serviced by a certified professional.

Car Battery Care Tips - Battery Care and Maintenance Tips

For every vehicle on the road, the car battery is most important component. If the car battery has any malfunctions whatsoever, then you will not be able to start your car. Most car owners will be facing problems sooner or later because vehicle lead acid battery has a limited lifespan.

If you have a regular battery maintenance schedule for the health of your car battery, then you can have a smooth start each and every time you want to use your automobile.

Here are some tips you can use to take care of your vehicle battery to get it working properly. When you parked your car, you should avoid keeping car headlights and other lights on for a long period of time. This will definitely drain your battery.

When the air conditioning unit in your vehicle is not required, it is best to switch it off to conserve power. If your vehicle is using a weak battery, try restraining from unnecessary honking. All these electronic components in your car will be draining on your battery bank thus sending its charge level into a low state. When a lead acid battery is discharged to a very low level, it is almost impossible to bring it back to its maximum power efficiency.

Here's a simple battery checking step you can do on a weekly basis. Check on the battery to make sure that there is no corrosion or rusting on the battery terminals. Rusting or foreign residue accumulated will cause the problems of difficult start ups because there will be a loss of surface contact between the electrical cable connectors with the battery terminals.

To prevent residue from building up, you can use a battery corrosion glue and sprays it on the terminals of the battery. This is usually the root cause for all car ignition problems. If you find any bluish green or white powdery layers forming around the battery terminals, then you have to take certain necessary steps to remove it or it will cause additional damages.

How To Protect Your Car From Rust?

Next to our homes, our vehicles are the next biggest investment we make. Some of the cars, trucks, and SUVs today cost more than some homes! Therefore, we want to protect them from the ravages of the environment such as rust. Certain problems are inevitable, but rust is one that can be prevented.

Some of the areas of vehicles that are most affected by rust are body panels including doors, fenders, the hood, and tailgate. The reason for this is that they inherently have areas that retain moisture. Depending upon the model of vehicle, there are many other areas that can retain moisture as well. Certain cars retain more moisture just due to the way they are designed, so you have to be especially careful and vigilant with them.

Some factors that you have no control over include the environment in which you live. If you live in a coastal area you are exposed to more salt air for example. If you live in an area where there is snow and ice on the road, the authorities usually use salt on the roads which can result in rust on your car's undercarriage.

When you find yourself in these types of environments you must wash your car more frequently. I recommend washing your car down weekly if you are in an area with salty roads or if you are living so near the coast that you get a salty film on your car.

Here are some overall tips for rust prevention that will go a long way to helping you to prevent rust formation on your vehicle:

1. Keep your car clean and coated with a finish protectant at all times.

2. Keep the underneath of your car rinsed continually when you are in an area where a lot of salt is present as mentioned above.

3. Keep your tires and wheels clean and polished and free from moisture holding material like leaves.

4. Make sure any drainage holes in the frame, floor, and the bottoms of the doors so that any moisture can get out.

5. Always open your doors after washing your car to allow any accumulated water to drain out.

Remember this, rust proofing only helps with new vehicles. If you try to do it on a pre-owned vehicle you may trap dirt and moisture and increase the risk of rust.

Car Ground Effects: Should You Install Yourself?

To make your car handle and look better you need the right car ground effects. Use aero-dynamic wings, spoilers, dams or skirts to get the down force plus the stylish look you have been looking for. These car ground effects features are not just pretty add-on's, they are designed to really work on your car, truck, jeep or SUV! Generally, they are wind-tunnel tested to generate huge rear down force to dramatically improve traction and keep your vehicle stable at high speeds without draining power from the engine.

In general you will save a bundle if you buy car ground effects from distributors carrying non OEM aftermarket brands (not the accessory offered by the dealer). The quality is comparable and the cost is much lower. If you install yourself you will save even more. But, should you be installing car ground effects yourself ? The answer depends on your skills and on the type of part and material selected.

Car ground effects products made in urethane and with simple designs are generally easier to install because they are lightweight and flexible. They usually come with double back 3M high strength tape which bonds the parts to your car tightly. Some manufacturers (like Wings West) offer great videos and detailed instructions on the installation of ground effects for cars. Products made out of fiberglass or with more elaborate designs, such as design style side skirts, require a lot of skills and experience. To explain it is important to understand the full process.

Installation is not the only step required in order to have a finished product. Before final installation there is a "dry fitting" procedure involved which requires experience in order to accomplish it properly, then there is the
prepping procedure, installation and of course painting. Dry fitting refers to the procedure where the installer makes all the necessary adjustment to the product in order to make it fit perfectly. It involves trimming, grinding
and filling gaps in order to have the pieces fit the contour of the car. This is a procedure that is best left to a professional body man who has done this type of work before, since he can do it a lot faster and cheaper then someone who has no experience.

If you are considering the purchase of car ground effects made out of fiberglass or with elaborate designs find the right shop to do the installation for you, before you make the purchase, to avoid unpleasant surprises. Look for a body man that has at least 1 year experience in installing all types of ground effects in different materials. He would be able to do the job in less time for less money, then a body man with 30 years of experience but who has never installed a car ground effect before.

What Is The Best Car To Restore?

I got asked a question the other day, really quite a ridiculous one if you think about it, one of the people who knows me, and knows what a car freak I really am posed the question, what is the best car to restore, this question really has no answer to it.

The best car to restore is all up to you, are you looking for a cheap car to restore, possibly a car that is easy to get parts for, like a Mustang , Camaro, or a Chevelle, or GTO, are you looking for a car that doesn't have a lot of work to do to get it restored, maybe you don't care if it takes 10 or 15 years to restore, because your just doing it for the fun and pleasure of building your own car.

A good place to start, is to think about what your favorite car is, and start there, look for your favorite year, make , and model, once you have found that, that you can begin locating one that's in the condition that your looking for, but keep this in mind, if your looking for cheap, and by cheap I mean $10,000 or less, you should not be looking for perfect either, there is a compromise here, between condition and price, a car will jump thousands of dollars going from number 3 condition to number 2.

A number 2 car is described as a car that's not perfect, but has very few flaws, and most of the factory installed options are still on the car, such as, the original engine is still there, transmission, most of the interior, and the paint is in fair to good condition, whereas a number 3 car would have a bit rougher body, with maybe even faded paint, and a little rust here and there, and it may not have the original engine, transmission, or interior still in the car.

What you should think about is what your going to do with the car, are you a purest, who has to have everything as it was from the factory, or do you want to hot rod your newly found love of your life, if your going to hot rod the car, you certain should not be paying the extra money for a number 1, or number 2 condition car, look for a 3 or lower for a project like this, you can save oodles of cash just by shopping smart.

But if you're a purest looking for a factory perfect restore, then it could be a very wise idea to look for a car that is in very good shape to begin with, it will make the restoration of the car cost a lot less, especially in parts and labor, these areas are where a restoration can sky rocket in cost, so this really all boils down to what you want to do with the car, if it's a show car, then you will be spending a grundle of cash on it any way, if you want to win a show with it, you're more then likely not going to win a lot of shows with a daily driver, and that poses yet another choice.

Do you want to drive the car, or show it, usually a street driver does not make a good show car, if you think about it, that daily driver gets parked in parking lots, and gets door dings, scratches and other anomalies that will happen just because you drive the car, whereas a show car, will never see a door ding, rock chip or any other nastiness that may happen to your daily driver, so think about what's more fun for you, and your personality, and that is the best way to decide what car to buy.
